  • The Gaffney boys’ soccer team has a good chance to make history Tuesday.
  • The Indians, the No. 3 seed from Region III, will be trying to win the school’s first ever playoff game when they open the playoffs at Region I’s No. 2 seed T.L. Hanna.

“I think we have a good chance,” Gaffney coach Frank Ridlehoover said. “Gaffney has never won a playoff game in soccer and I think this is a good opportunity. I think we played the overall tougher competition.”

The Yellow Jackets have an 8-2 region mark but have lost all eight of their non-region games. The Indians finish the regular season at 13-5 overall and 5-5 in the region. Four of the team’s losses have been to highly-ranked Northwestern and Fort Mill.

Gaffney is led by forwards Justin Harris and Matt Skinner - two proven goal scorers. But Ridlehoover said the Indians must also play well in the midfield and in goal.

“The team is real excited about the chance,” he said. “It’s the first time we’re the No. 3 seed in the playoffs so we didn’t have to play a No. 1 seed in the first round.”

The winner of Tuesday’s matchup will likely travel on Thursday to South Aiken.

the No. 2-rated team in the state.
