Blacksburg offensive coordinator Travis Miller is in no hurry to pick a starting quarterback.

Miller said there’s been no clear-cut winner during spring practice - which concludes today - and the quarterback battle between Cameron Byars and Dustin Byars might not be decided until the Wildcats begin the regular season next fall.

“We just will leave it up in the air,” he said. “We might even use both during the non-region part of our schedule to see which one is moving the ball for us.”

The Wildcats entered spring practice hoping to improve its running game, which was sporadic at best last year.

“We emphasized the running game this spring,” he said. “We want to be more of a power running team.”

That just might happen with an improving offensive line.

“Our offensive line looks better,” he said. “We look stronger and quicker there.”

Miller said he’s been impressed with tackle Cameron Duffie, who moved from guard; center Tanner Ettlemeyer, and guards Trey Williams, Malcolm Ford and Josh Lester. Tackle Matthew Sexton is also making strides, he said.

Converted wide receiver Gary Gaut is showing promise at running back.

“He’s quick and he’s been hitting the hole fast,” Miller said.

When the Wildcats go to the I-formation, Revis Hull and Zach Vinson will likely alternate at fullback, according to Miller.

Wide receivers Tim Boyd and Dustin Deese and tight end Gary Moore have also been bright spots this spring.
