Freeman J. Gaffney
Retired from Blacksburg
Freeman J. Gaffney, 61, of Century Care, Shelby, N.C., formerly of 408 E. Lime St., Blacksburg, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at 4:05 a.m. in Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Clyde H. Gaffney and the late Sarah Jane Burris Gaffney.
He was a retired employee of the City of Blacksburg and joined Pine Grove Baptist Church at an early age.
He is survived by two daughters, Tashia Wilson and Kimberly Wilson Reid, both of Blacksburg; two sons, Ernest Wilson of Gaffney and Scottie Wilson of Greenville; a brother Deacon Harold Gaffney of Blacksburg; seven grandchildren; two aunts, Elizabeth Gaffney of Blacksburg and Anna Patterson of Shelby; and the Rev. Lillie B. Ford of Shelby, who was reared in the home as a sister.
Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Galilee Baptist Church of Blacksburg with the Revs. Les Howard, Willie H. Wood Jr., Larry Davis, Marvin Tate and Lillie Ford officiating. Body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
The family will be at the home of his brother Deacon Harold Gaffney of 313 Seven Springs St., Blacksburg, at other times.
Flower bearers will be Gwen Jennings, Margaret Sarratt, Tina Harris, Betty Collier, Dorothy Parker and Janie Wilson. Pallbearers will be Eugene White, S.L. Ford, Bob King, Eddie Hipps, Regionald Harris Sr. and Napolean Thompson.

Jean F. Vincent
New York native
SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — Jean Forman Vincent, 85, died Thursday, May 12, 2005, in her home after a brief illness.
A native of Pittsford, N.Y., she was born Feb. 20, 1920 to the late Albert and Carrie Leaper Forman. She graduated from Pittsford High School and attended Rider Business College and studied piano at the Eastman School of Music. In 1957, she and her husband Edwin of 65 years moved from Pittsford to Charlotte before making a final move to Southern Pines in 1978. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband Edwin; a son Larry Vincent of Gaffney; a daughter Gail Connon of Ft. Myers, Fla.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Sunday at Our Savoir Lutheran Church in Southern Pines.
The family will receive friends at the home at 634 Knollwood Village, Southern Pines.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Franklin Callahan Sr.
Korean War veteran
Franklin "Frank" Callahan Sr., 71, of 921 Oak Grove Road, No. 4, Kings Mountain, N.C., died Thursday, May 12, 2005, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cherokee County on Oct. 12, 1933, he was the husband of Betty Jo Bowen Callahan of the home and the son of the late Ralph Callahan and the late Vera Wylie Callahan.
He was an electrician with Hoke Electric for many years and later became a self-employed electrician. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Chruch in Blacksburg. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Frank Callahan Jr. of Shelby, Mike Callahan and his wife Kathy of Grover, Keith Callahan and his wife Kim of Kings Mountain; a daughter, Cindy Elumbaugh and her husband Steve of Forest City; three sisters, Elaine Moss of Blacksburg, Carolyn Kuykendall and her husband Kurt of Kings Mountain, and Pat McCullough of Boiling Springs; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and special friends Bob and Geraldine Greene of Grover.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Tom Callahan.
Services were held Sunday at Rock Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Harris officiating. Burial was in Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will be at the home at other times.

Billy Tindall
Mobile home mover
Billy Tindall, 73, of 938 Batchelor Drive, Blacksburg, died Sunday, May 15, 2005, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of Gladys Peterson Tindall and son of the late Poke Ray Tindall and the late Macie Lou Hughey Tindall.
He was a member of Cherokee Falls Baptist Church and a self-employed mobile home mover.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son Bryan Tindall of Blacksburg; a daughter Lori T. Culbreth of Gaffney; a brother Jimmy Tindall of Gaffney; a sister Shirley T. Hampton of Blacksburg; and grandchildren, Chasity Hamrick and Chelsey Culbreth, both of Gaffney, and Keely Tindall and Lucas Tindall of Blacksburg; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Tindall.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Cherokee Falls Baptist Church. The body will be placed in the church a half hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens.
Friends will be received from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gordon Mortuary. At other times the family will be at 938 Batchelor Drive, Blacksburg.

Jamie B. Collis
Sunday School teacher
Jamie Bates Blanton Collis, 95, of 917 Cliffside Hwy., Gaffney, died Sunday, May 15, 2005, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, she is the widow of Arthur Collins and daughter of the late Bates and Alice Ray Blanton.
She was a member of State Line Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher for 50 years.
She is survived by four daughters, Jacqueline Bostic, Linda Duckett, Dianne Brown, and Sylvia Bailey, all of Chesnee; two sons, Keith Collins of Honea Path and Arthur Bates Collins; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She is preceded in death by three grandchildren, Michael Bostic, David Bailey and Teresa Payne.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at State Line Baptist Church with burial following in the church cemetery.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Eggers Funeral Home in Chesnee.
The family will be at the home of Jacqueline Bostic, 933 Cliffside Hwy., Gaffney, at other times.

James Grigg
Former welder in Gaffney
James Thomas Grigg, 58, of 1025 Warlick Road, Lawndale, N.C., died Saturday, May 14, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center.
Born April 26, 1947 in Cleveland County, he was the son of Dorothy Davis Grigg of Cherryville and the late Lawrence Thompson Grigg.
He was a member of Waco Baptist Church and served in the Army during Vietnam. He was employed as a welder by Sanders Brothers Inc. of Gaffney.
He is survived by a son, Brian Grigg of Lawndale; three daughters, Sherry G. Ellis of Lawndale, April G. Hewitt of Hickory, N.C., and Jessica Grigg of Ridgeway, Va.; a brother Everett Grigg of Cherryville, N.C.; three sisters, Louise Gardner, Evelyn Kiser and Carolyn Efird, all of Cherryville; the mothers of his children, Martha Grigg of Shelby and Sara Grigg of Ridgeway; and a grandson, Christopher Brackett.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Capernaum Cemetery with the Dr. Harold Fite officiating. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston, N.C.

James Ben Rice, 71, of 800 McBrayer Homestead Road, Boiling Springs, N.C., died Friday, May 13, 2005, at Crawley Memorial Hospital in Boiling Springs.
