Former resident of public housing says gas leak caused health problems; files lawsuit By TARA JENNINGSLedger Staff Writer
A former resident of public housing in Gaffney is suing the Gaffney Housing Authority Development Corporation because she claims she was exposed to a gas leak in her home for a number of years. Gloria Ann Smith says she was last exposed to the natural gas leak inside the Gaffney Housing Authority apartment when she moved out of her home Dec. 3, 2003. According to the complaint filed at the Cherokee County Courthouse, the leak “either caused or aggravated a pre-existing condition that caused her mental and physical suffering, shortness of breath, loss of enjoyment of life, so much that she had to expend monies for medical treatment, powerful potent medication, and will suffer permanently into the future.” She claims the Gaffney Housing Authority failed to warn her of the dangers associated with the leak and failed to properly inspect the gas lines in the apartment. She also said they failed to maintain a proper ventilation system and failed to install proper heating and cooking appliances. Gaffney Housing Authority Director Randy Mathis said he isn’t aware of a gas leak in the apartment. “We aren’t aware of a problem then or now in that apartment,” Mathis said. “We have to see what’s presented (to the court) and go from there.” Smith is suing for damages and the costs of the court action in addition to any further relief determined by the court. The Gaffney Housing Authority is usually represented by Gaffney attorney Usha Bridges, Mathis said, adding they may seek additional counsel to handle the complaint. Smith is represented by Spartanburg attorney Albert V. Smith.
