Gaffney boys’ basketball coach Mark Huff said he stopped by the Cherokee County Summer Youth Basketball League on Friday to watch ‘the stars of tomorrow.’

Those ‘stars’ gave him plenty to be excited about.

The league opened its ninth year with some huge upsets and breakout performances from Markeith Hillstock and Chase Tate.

“The league is off to a good start,” league founder Laymond Dewberry said. “The gym was packed both nights and we had a lot of competitive games and good performances.”

Hillstock scored 25 points to lead the Bulldogs No. 1 to a 36-27 win over Shady Grove Baptist Church in a Division II battle Saturday.

Dre Dover had 12 points in a losing effort.

Chase Tate had 14 points but it wasn’t enough as Freightliner upset OneTime No. 2, 42-31, in another Division II contest.

OneTime No. 2 was the preseason favorite.

Josh Corry and Cory Jenson each had 12 points to pace Freightliner.

Larikus Holmes had seven points to lead the Magic to a 27-13 victory over defending champion Lucas Financial on Saturday.

In another upset Saturday, Deshawn Dawkins had 12 points to power L&L Realty to a 32-22 victory over the Blue Devils.

The league tipped off its regular season Friday with four games in Division I, which feature several players from the 3-time state champion Gaffney Indians.

One current Indian standout, Rodney Love, had 14 points in the Clippers’ 29-26 loss to the Trailblazers, who were led by Gaffney star Julius Wilkerson’s nine points.

Lee Sartor had 11 points to lead the 76ers to a 41-16 rout of Buck Shoals.
