Madison D. Wall

Real estate developer;

decorated WWII veteran

Madison Dean Wall, 89, of 1405 N. Limestone St., died Thursday, July 14, 2005, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.

A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of Frances Simpson Wall and son of the late Fred Wall and the late Myrtle Bridges Wall.

Mr. Wall was a real estate developer and investor. He was a decorated World War II veteran, having received the Distinguished Flying Cross Air Medal and the EAMET Service Medal. More recently, Mr. Wall was inducted into the Cherokee County Hall of Bravery in May, 2001. He was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Mary Wall Bernhardy, and her husband, Kevin, of Gaffney; and a son, John L. Wall, and his wife, Deedee, of Gaffney.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the downtown chapel of ShufordHatcher Funeral Home,conducted by Dr. Clyde Thomas. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:30-2 p.m. at the downtown funeral home.

The family is at the residence.

Harry D. Cook Sr.

Security guard supervisor

BLACKSBURG – Harry Dean Cook Sr., 69, of 602 Hillcrest Drive, died Thursday, July 14, 2005, at Peachtree Centre.

A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late James Broadas Cook and the late Anna Corrine Isler Cook. He was a member of Broad River Baptist Church and served in the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department for over 43 years. He worked as a security guard supervisor.

Surviving are two sons, Harry Dean Cook Jr. and Phillip Kendall Cook, both of Gaffney; and five grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Cook was preceded in death by a brother, Tommy Edward Cook Sr.

Services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Broad River Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Norman Philbeck. Burial will be in Clingman Memorial Gardens.

Body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be members of the Blacksburg Volunteer Fire Department.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at Gordon Mortuary and at other times they will be at 134 Bens Farm Road, Gaffney.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of South Carolina, 1612 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C. 29340.

James E. Posey

Services for James Edward Posey, 87, of 367 Nancy Creek Road, will be held today at 3 p.m. at Mount Sinai Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. C.A. Wallace and Dewey Whittenburg. Burial with military rites will be in the church cemetery. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be James Camp, Louis Lockhart, Robert Littlejohn, Michael Coleman, Billy Byers and James Davis. Honorary pallbearer will be Roger Phillips.

Flower bearers will be Nellie Covington, Delia Ballard, Fredonia Fuller, Perniece Jefferies, Daisy Smith, Juanita Watkins and Inez Littlejohn.

Honorary flower bearers will be Roberta Robbs, Betty Best, Cheynia Allen, Frances Wilson, Margaret Coleman and Sadie Phillips.

Earl E. Jones Jr.

Retired brickmason

Earl Edward “Buck” Jones Jr., 88, of 1011 Boiling Springs Hwy., died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at his home.

A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of Paunice Holt Jones and son of the late Earl

E. Jones Sr. and the

late Arhetta Knight

Jones. He was a retired brickmason, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Ray Jones of Gaffney; three daughters, Sybil J. Moss of Earl, N.C., Sandra J. Queen and Freda J. Upchurch, both of Gaffney; nine grandchildren; 15 greatgrandchildren; two greatgreat grandchildren; and two sisters, Betty Bolin of Blacksburg and Thelma King of High Point, N.C.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Jones was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Smith; a brother, Robert “Bob” Jones; a granddaughter, Jill Jones; and a grandson, Bodie Upchurch.

Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by Drs. Clyde Thomas and Charles Moss. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service and anytime at the home of his daughter, Sandra Queen, 1003 Boiling Springs Hwy.

Betty H. Talley

GAFFNEY – Betty Ann Hyatt Talley, 77, of 725 College Drive, died Monday, July 11, 2005, at her residence.

Mrs. Talley was the widow of James Roy Talley. A native of Gaffney, she was a daughter of the late T. W. Hyatt and the late Mattie Lou Skinner Hyatt. She was retired from Community Cash Stores and was a member of Limestone Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Elaine Patterson of Easley and Jo Rogers of Greenville; two sons, Eddie Talley of Sumter and Bruce Talley of Gaffney; a brother, Winford Hyatt of Gaffney; and four grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Talley was preceded in death by a sister, Miriam Hyatt.

Graveside services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Revs. Ron Singleton and Joyce Murphy.

The family is at the residence, 725 College Drive.

Iris H. Webber

Former assistant librarian

at Cowpens High School

COWPENS – Iris Amanda Henderson Webber, 89, of 307 Carole Courtney Road, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at her home.

Born June 8, 1916, in Pacolet, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Newton and Chacy Maude Burdette Henderson and the widow of John William Webber. She was a former assistant librarian at Cowpens High School and a former clerk at Potters Store.

Mrs. Webber was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she was ward librarian for 25 years, served in the state young women’s program and Sunday School program, and also served as a Sunday School teacher in the ward for 25 years. She was valedictorian of the 1933 graduating class of Cowpens High School.

Survivors include a son, Ronald Earl Webber of Union; a daughter, Carole W. Courtney of Cowpens; grandchildren, Amanda and Matthew Cox, Ashley and Sean Hintze, Kyle, John, Justin and Derek Courtney, Susan and Richard Epps, Kim and John Foster, Karen and Blaine Henderson, and Sharon and Rob Carlin; and great-grandchildren, Matthew, Hunter, Jade and Wyatt Henderson, Alex and Elliott Cox, Brittany and Ryan Williams, and Konner and Tanner Hintze.

Graveside services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Daniel Morgan Memorial Gardens, Cowpens, conducted by Bishop John Alexander Stephenson IV and Bishop Manfred Martin.

Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Latter-Day Saints Welfare Fund, 448 Ransdell Drive, Spartanburg, S.C. 29307.

The family is at the home of her daughter, Carole W. Courtney, 305 Carole Courtney Road, Cowpens.

John A. Fitch

Retired from Duke Power

SHELBY – John Alvin Fitch, 74, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at Wendover Hospice of Cleveland County.

A native of Cleveland County, N.C., he was born on May 8, 1931, a son of the late William McKinley and Lelia Self Fitch. He and his wife, Joyce Stapleton Fitch, had been married for 53 years. Mr. Fitch worked with Duke Power Company, retiring as a transmission line supervisor after 29 years of service.

Mr. Fitch faithfully attended First Assembly of God in Shelby.

John was an avid CB radio operator and avid gardener. He served in the National Guard.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Susan Fitch Hyatt, and her husband, Edward (Eddie) Hyatt, of Blacksburg; a grandson, Dale Fitch of Charlotte, N.C.; a sister in-law, Helen Smith of Shelby; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Virgil and Delores Church of Shelby; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Fitch was preceded in death by five sisters, Edith Fitch Christian of Davidson, C.C., Clara Lee Fitch DeLamar of Spartanburg, Willie Fitch Dycus of Pineville, N.C., Betty Fitch Edwards of Roaring River, N.C., and Andrea Fitch McSwain of Shelby; and a brother, William (Maje) Fitch.

Services will be held today at 2 p.m. at First Assembly of God, conducted by the Rev. Jack Fox. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

Body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m.

Clarence E. Horne

Retired from Joanna Mills

UNION – Clarence E. Horne, 88, of 302 Spring St., died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at his home after a sudden illness.

Mr. Horne was born in Union on July 11, 1917, a son of the late John Horne and Ester Sinclair Horne Henderson.

He was the widower of Mable Taylor Horne and was

retired from Joanna

veteran of World War II, he attended Full Gospel Tabernacle of God Church.

Mr. Horne was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Surviving are a daughter, Erlene Sparks Gore of Union; two sons, Harold E. Horne and Donnie S. Horne, and wife, Kim, all of Union; 10 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Horne was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Spencer Pittman.

Services will be held today at 4 p.m. at S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rick Cook. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today at the funeral home from 2-4 p.m. prior to the services.

The family is at the home of his son and daughter-inlaw, Donnie and Kim Horne, 207 Hightower Lake Road, Union.
