This Saturday, Blacksburg High School gymnasium will host the third annual Cherokee Classic basketball game and fundraiser for the Kelvin Young Scholarship Foundation.
The event pairs former Blacksburg and Gaffney High basketball standouts against each other to raise money for Kelvin Young’s Scholarship Foundation. The series is tied 1-1, with Gaffney winning last year’s game.
The foundation started as a way for former basketball star Kelvin Young to give back to his community through the three churches that supported him through the years.
Graduating seniors from Youngs Grove, Bethel, and Island Creek Baptist Church are all eligible for the scholarship. Last year’s scholarship winner was Byron Jefferies of Gaffney High School and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was awarded $1,000 to attend Clemson University.
“I was honored to award Byron a scholarship. excelled in the classroom, in athletics, and in community,” Young said. “This year, I’m pleased announce that we are awarding the scholarship Miss Andrea Young. She had the highest grade point average of the students at Youngs Grove Baptist Church. Andrea plans to attend University of South Carolina in the fall.”
