Rev. Woodrow Monroe
Baptist minister
for 56 years
COLUMBIA – A private memorial service for the Rev. Woodrow Franklin Monroe, 92, will be held at a later.
Rev. Monroe, widower of Jureia Elizabeth Bright Monroe, died Saturday, July 16, 2005. Son of the late Winslow
Franklin and Mattie
Hulsey Monroe, he
was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Medical Corps. He was a Baptist minister for 56 years.
Surviving are a son, Teddy Monroe; daughters and sonsin law, Sybil and David Knight and Mary Ellen and Lee Honeycutt; son-in-law, Carroll Leopard; grandchildren, Paige Thornton, Anna Locke, Jennifer Greene, Rebecca Monroe and Ellen Honeycutt; and great-grandchildren, Harrison Thornton, Charles Thornton and Myers Locke.
In addition to his parents, Rev. Monroe was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Joy Leopard.

Urgel H. Lovingood
Retired from the textile
and carpentry industries
Urgel Hill Lovingood, 92, of 2927 Union Hwy., died Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at his residence.
A native of Cherokee County, N.C., he was the husband of Lula McSwain Lovingood of the home and son of the late James Fred Lovingood and the late Tina Palmer Lovingood. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and retired from the textile and carpentry industries.
Mr. Lovingood's hobbies included woodworking, gardening and proud upkeep of his dwelling.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Ann L. Sprouse and her husband, Walter, of Gaffney and Norma L. McCluney and her husband, Bill, of Gaffney; a son, Fred D. "Bud" Lovingood and his wife, Jean, of Gaffney; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Lovingood was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy L. Burgess.
Services will be held today at 3 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Dwight Easler and Jerry Ford. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Mike Sprouse, Tim Sprouse, Joey McCluney, Brian McCluney, Jeff Lovingood, Steve Lovingood, Rob Burgess and Doug Haley.
The family will receive friends today from 2-3 p.m. at the church prior to the service and at other times they will be at the home.

Glenard S. Martin
Cherokee County native
GROVER – Glenard S. Martin, 67, of 103 Brookwood Drive, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at his home.
A native of Cherokee County, Mr. Martin was the widower of Bonnie Barrett Martin and son of the late Glenmore Shirey and Bertha Ard Barbare Martin. He was preceded in death by his stepfather, Bun Martin.
Mr. Martin was a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church. He was a devoted husband for 49 years and caring father and grandfather of seven children. He was the happiest when sharing the great outdoors with family and friends.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Beth Martin of Shelby; a daughter, Elizabeth Martin, of Blacksburg and son-in-law, Fred Hull, of Blacksburg; grandchildren, Thomas L. Martin, Jacob Martin, both of Shelby, Tabitha Byars, Paul Hardin, both of Grover, and Bradley Kurth of Blacksburg; five sisters, Carol Shirey, Sandra Shirey, Thelma Shirey, Ella Mae Shirey and Jackie Shirey; three brothers, Wade Shirey, Glenn Shirey and Glenn Shirey; and a brotherin law, Bill Kirby of Grover.
In addition to his wife, parents and stepfather, Mr. Martin was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Newell.
A celebration of life service will be held today at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Grover, conducted by the Rev. David Saldo. Burial will be in Grover City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Fred Hull, John Carpenter, Brian Gilliam, Stevie Goforth, Gene Pearson and Max Cochrane.
The family is at the residence.

Furniture salesman,
retired carpenter
M.B. Darwin, 87, of 316 Darwin Road, died Thursday, July 21, 2005, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Gaffney, he was the husband of Lois Elizabeth Lavender Darwin and son of the late B. Darwin and the late Nettie Marsh Darwin. He was a furniture salesman, retired carpenter and a member of Draytonville Baptist Church.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Martha D. Vassey , and her husband, Bill, of Gaffney; two grandsons, Michael L. Vassey and his wife, Kristi, and Jeff E. Vassey and his wife, Mollie, all of Gaffney; a great-grandson, Nicholas E. Vassey of Gaffney; and a sister, Mildred D. Sparks of Gaffney.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Darwin was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy Darwin and Bobby Darwin.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Draytonville Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Robert Ivey.
The family will receive friends anytime today at the home of Bill and Martha Vassey, 304 Darwin Road.

Walter Earl Whelchel Sr., 60, of 421 S. Green River Road, died Thursday, July 21, 2005, at his residence.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Nellie Smith Whelchel and son of Agnes Mitchell Whelchel of Gaffney and the late Wesley W. Whelchel. He was a member of High Point Baptist Church and a security guard.
Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Walter Earl Whelchel Jr. of Gaffney; a daughter, Karen Whelchel Horne of Gaffney; two brothers, Billy Whelchel and Leo Whelchel, both of Gaffney; three sisters, Doris Smith and husband, Franklin, of Gaffney, Betty Hughes and husband, J.C., and Carolyn Silvers and husband, Bobby, all of Gaffney; and grandchildren, Kayla Horne and Kelsey Horne, both of Gaffney.
In addition to his father, Mr. Whelchel was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Whelchel and Wesley Whelchel.

Clarence Lee Wilkins, 54, of 1409 Old Georgia Hwy., died Wednesday, July 20, 2005, at 4:15 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Healthcare Center.
Son of the late Horace Wilkins Sr. and the late Grace Knuckles Wilkins, he was a native of Gaffney and last employed by Lin Pac Corp.
Surviving are a daughter, Alfredia Wilkins of Gaffney; two sons, Sherman Watkins of Gaffney and John Wayne Morgan who was reared in the home; four sisters, Dorothy Hardy, Annie Lipscomb, Betty Wilkins, Nina Jefferies and Sheryl Mayberry, all of Gaffney; three brothers, Horace Wilkins Jr., Johnny Wilkins and Jams Wilkins, all of Gaffney; and three grandchildren, Veronica Camp of Gaffney, Csereant Wilkins and Michael Watkins, both of Greenville.
Services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Philadelphia Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. Danny Burnside and Roderick Oglesby and Drs. Michael Bridges and J.W. Sanders Sr. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday at 2 p.m.
Pallbearers will be his nephews, Justine Wilkins, Derrick Wilkins, Johnny Wilkins, Kenneth Lipscomb, Donald Lipscomb, Jeremy Hardy, Robbie Hardy and Rev. Roderick Oglesby.
Flower bearers will be Tonja Hardy, Reeshemah Hardy, Vernique Hardy, Angela Brown, Andrea Lipscomb, Horacishal Wilkins, Grenisha Beatty, Shonda Huskey, Kada Beatty and Aja Wilkins.

Lillian E. Manning
Lillian Evelyn Manning died Sunday, July 17, 2005, in Washington, D.C.
Surviving are her brothers, Marion, Craig, Lynn, Keith, Colin and Peter Manning; a sister, Dr. Georgetta Manning Cox; and many other family and friends.
Services will be held Tuesday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, 6001 Western Ave., North West, Washington, D.C. Interment will take place in Gaffney.
Miss Manning was preceded in death by her parents, George Edward and Evelyn Gaffney Manning, and her sister, Lynnette Manning Moore.
