The South Carolina Highway Patrol is holding a community meeting at 7 p.m. today for residents whose daily commutes will be affected by the thousands of motorists expected for the Fire Lake Festival in August.

The meeting to discuss traffic plans will be at Macedonia Baptist Church at 216 Macedonia Road in Gaffney.

To avoid the possibility of major traffic delays on Interstate 85, which already moves 50,000 to 55,000 vehicles a day through the county, the Highway Patrol is planning to divert the festival traffic to secondary roads in Cherokee and Spartanburg counties using six electronic message boards. The Highway Patrol is expecting 25,000 to 40,000 vehicles during the event, which is scheduled for Aug. 11 through Aug. 14.

The affected secondary roads in Cherokee County are Cannons Campground Road, Green River Road, Hyatt Street, Lemmons Lane, Mount Olive Road, Old Post Road, Overbrook Drive, Sunny Slope Drive, Swofford Drive, and Webber Road.

In Spartanburg County, the following roads are also affected: Battleground Road, Bud Arthur Bridge Road, Cannons Campground Road, Horry Road, Mount Olive Road and Phillips Road.

Both northbound and southbound traffic at exits 83, 87 and 90 will be affected.

Vehicle placards will be distributed at the meeting so that troopers can identify local residents and allow them to have normal access along the affected roads.
