‘Starting Second Career’topic of AAUW program
Lynne Shore (right) delighted Gaffney Branch AAUW members with her
presentation about starting a second career at the group’s June meeting.
Mrs. Shore is the S.C. AAUW vice-president. Susan Fitzgerald
Bruce (left), program vice-president of the branch, arranged for Mrs.
Shore’s speaking appearance and obviously enjoyed her talk.
“Starting a Second Career” was
the title of Lynn Shore’s presentation
at the June meeting of the
Gaffney Branch of the American
Association of University Women
(AAUW). Mrs. Shore’s topic dealt
with her recent business venture
with her husband’s company,
CShore Services. Her part of the
business is called Personal Services.
Mrs. Shore, who lives in Taylors,
explained that she had always been
the caregiver in her family. The
impetus for her business was realizing
that everyone does not have the
same kind of support she was able
to give her family.
She said there was more to getting
her small, home-based business
started than people might imagine.
Besides arranging for an accountant
and increasing her personal
liability and car insurance policies,
she had to consider how many
hours per week she wanted to
work, how she would advertise her
business, and how to charge for
her time and services. Her services
have included transportation
services, especially for doctor and
hospital needs; shopping of various
kinds; and pet and house sitting.
She said that helping senior citizens
and others who are unable to
drive for various reasons is particularly
gratifying. She also enjoys
being able to set her own schedule.
Mrs. Shore is completing twoyear
terms as conference coordinator
and program vice-president
of the South Carolina AAUW. She
graduated from Greensboro College
in Greensboro, N.C., with an AB in
history and taught English and history
for 10 years in the Greenville
County School District. An active
volunteer, she especially enjoyed
teaching English as a Second Language
with the Greenville Literacy
Center and volunteering in Community
Ministries for St. Frances
Women’s and Family Hospital in
Greenville. Prior to her state positions
in AAUW, she was program
vice-president and president of the
Greenville Branch of AAUW.
The only requirement for being a
member of AAUW is a degree from
an accredited college or university.
The Gaffney Branch meets on the
second Monday of each month.
