Authorities identify biker killed in I-85 crash

The Cherokee County Coro-ner’s Office has released the name of a motorcyclist killed Sunday in a head-on collision on Interstate 85.

Deputy Coroner Glenn Fuller said 57-year-old Connie Lee Pitts of Spartanburg died at the scene of the 2:30 p.m. accident.

The coroner’s office waited to release the victim’s name until his family in Clinton, Maryland, had been notified.

Pitts’ motorcycle was struck by a 2005 Chrysler minivan that crossed over the cable barriers in the median of the interstate just north of Exit 102.

The driver of the minivan, 78-year-old Ed Gibson of Ran-dleman, N.C., was northbound when he drove into the median and lost control of the vehicle, police said.
