’Cats display lack of intensity in scrimmage against Buford
Quarterback Cameron Byars threw a TD pass to Tim Boyd for the Wildcats’ lone score in a scrimmage Tuesday. Blacksburg coach Robbie Blanton said Tuesday’s scrimmage against Buford was all about intensity.
More specifically, the lack of it on the part of his Wildcats.
“I was just very disappointed,” he said. “We were very flat and we didn’t play inspired. I think we took Buford lightly after the good scrimmage we had against Blue Ridge.”
A Cameron Byars to Tim Boyd hook-up accounted for the Wildcats’ lone touchdown. The Wildcats only other scoring chance came late in the scrimmage but a fourth down pass fell incomplete in the end zone.
The wet field conditions might have con-tributed to his team’s offensive woes, Blanton said.
“The scrimmage was delayed an hour because of the rain and the field was underwater. But we didn’t do a good job up front.”
The Wildcats’ defense also struggled, giving up four Buford scores.
“We just didn’t play tough and that disappoint-ed me,” he said. “We let them push us around. They were fast and quick and we had trouble with that.”
The defense also gave up big plays on third down.
“We just didn’t show a lot of mental toughness,” he said.
Offensive lineman Mal-colm Ford injured his knee. He’ll be re-evaluated today, Blanton said.
The scrimmage was the last one for the Wildcats this preseason. The Wildcats will play Jonesville in the Chero-kee County Jamboree.
The Wildcats will take a break from practice for Media Day today.
