Born on Rocky Top Mountain

in Newport, Tenn.

Horace Lee Turner, 86, of 104 Saddle Drive, passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at Spartanburg Regional Heart Center.

A native of Newport, Tenn., he was born on Rocky Top Mountain. He and his family moved to Gaffney in the 1920s. Mr. Turner was the widower of Glenda Allen Turner.

As a young man, he worked as a carpenter and also in textiles. In 1942, Horace, along with his twin brother, Worley, started a tool sharpening and small engine repair business. They remained in business until retirement. He was an avid outdoorsman and passed along his love of nature and the outdoors to both his children and two generations of nephews and nieces.

Mr. Turner loved metal detecting and target shooting. He could tell a good story and loved a good joke. But mostly, he loved his children.

He is survived by his children who absolutely adored him, one son, Jimmy Lee Turner of the home, one daughter, Laura Ann Turner of Gaffney, and Lisa Jenkins whom he loved as a daughter; nephews, Johnny Turner, Thomas Painter, Jimmy McCraw, Frank Walker; and nieces, Mary McCraw and Betty Wilburn.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper and Laura Smith Turner; and brothers, Worley Turner (his twin), William Turner, Ike Turner and Jona Turner.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at White Columns of Gaffney. At other times they will be at the home of his daughter at 131 Cheyenne Drive, Gaffney.

A celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2005, at 1 p.m. graveside at Oakland Cemetery, with the Rev. Terry Pleasant officiating.

Grayson Humphries

Retired power line foreman

SHELBY – Daniel Grayson Humphries, 75, of New House community, died Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was a retired power line foreman from Sumter Building and Construction Co. and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Humphries was preceded in death by his parents, Buren Sr. and Georgia Holland Humphries, and two brothers, Robert Humphries and Harold Humphries.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Peggy Philbeck Humphries of the home; a daughter, Danna Knox of Hickory, N.C.; two brothers, Buren Humphries Jr. of Shelby and Ronald "Earl" Humphries of Gaffney; two sisters, Cora Petty and Diane Patterson, both of Shelby; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Sandy Plains Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Joel Dale and Dr. Nancy Petty. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall for one hour after the service.
