Sue H. Scruggs
Homemaker
Sue Louise "Nanny" Hall Scruggs, 56, of 306 Marietta St., died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, in Cherokee County.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the widow of Dolphus Scruggs and daughter of the late Elex Hall and the late Myrtle Blackwell Hall. She was a housewife and homemaker and a member of St. John Baptist Church. She loved her children and grandchildren.
Surviving are two sons, Wayne Scruggs and Michael Scruggs, both of Gaffney; four brothers, Jimmy Hall of Rutherfordton, N.C., Robert Hall, Kenneth Hall and Dennis Hall, all of Gaffney; five sisters, Doris Scruggs, Betty Hall, Evelyn Sprouse, Mary Whisonant and Joyce Dover, all of Gaffney; and three grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Scruggs was preceded in death by brothers, Junior Hall, William Hall, Eugene Hall, Clyde Hall and Harold Hall; a sister, Patricia Hall; and a grandson, Allen D. Scruggs Jr.
Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Revs. Jimmy Ramsey and Tim Osment.
Pallbearers will be Dean Whisonant, Brut Whisonant, Clint Hall, Justin Hall, Johnny Hall and Ray Hall.
The family is at 306 Marietta St.

"Scottie" Scruggs
Employed by Musgrove Mill
Jeffrey Scottie Scruggs, 32, of 331 Over Hill Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, in Cherokee County.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the husband of Crystal Blackwell Scruggs and son of the late Dolphus Allen Scruggs and the late Sue Louise Hall Scruggs. He was an employee of Musgrove Mill and a member of St. John Baptist Church. He loved to sing and raise dogs.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a stepson, Jamie Allen of the home; two brothers, Wayne Scruggs and Michael Scruggs, both of Gaffney; and many aunts and uncles.
Graveside services will be held today at 11 a.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Revs. Jimmy Ramsey and Tim Osment.
Pallbearers will be Chad Hamrick, Chucky Martin, Tom Scruggs, Paul Fowler, Jason Hall and Amos Holcomb.
The family is at 306 Marietta St.

Hershell D. Porter
Retied from Celanese
Hershell D. Porter, 68, of Charlotte died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, in Carolinas Medical Center.
Mr. Porter was born in Gaffney on Feb. 5, 1937, a son of the late Pinkney Austin and Blease Ramsey Porter. He was a member of Westmoreland Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon, chairman of the Stewardship Committee, taught Sunday School, served on the History Committee and Pastor Search Committee, was former chairman of the Brotherhood and a member of the Senior Men's Sunday School Class.
Mr. Porter was a member of Excelsior Masonic Lodge No. 261 and was owner and operator of H.D. Porter Financial Tax Service and a Public Accountant. He retied from Hoechst Celanese Corporation as a systems analyst after 30 years of service. He was a graduate of Blacksburg High School, where he was a star athlete, and also attended CPCC.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Faye Jones Porter; children, Robbin Porter McCullen of Charlotte; Kristen Porter Whitesides of Mt. Holly, N.C.; sisters, Annie Sue Hambright and Carolyn Turner of Blacksburg and Marilyn Moss of York; brothers, Howard Doyle Porter of Bluefield, Va., and Glenn Austin Porter of Santee, S.C.; and grandchildren, Cramer and Haylee McCullen and Lucas and Jacob Whitesides.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Porter was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Porter of Shelby.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Westmoreland Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. L. Todd Marlow, Jimmy King, Max Pendleton and Cecil Ballard. Burial will be in Forest Lawn West Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the church, 3205 Sam Wilson Road, Charlotte, from 6:308:30 p.m. Thursday.

Edd Thompson
Retired from Hamrick Mills
Edd Thompson, 80, of 155 Watts Drive, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
Born in C h e r o k e e County, he was the husband of Christine Watts Holmes Thompson and son of the late Anderson and Floree Morgan Thompson. He
was a member of Concord
Baptist Church, a veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Hamrick Mills.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Edd Thompson Jr. and Richard Thompson, both of Shelby; five daughters, Catherine Kee, Audrey Thompson, Francine Thompson, Pearlie Mae Thompson and Kay Watts, all of Shelby; a brother, Abe Thompson of Blacksburg; a sister, Mickey Corry of Blacksburg; and step-children, Louis Holmes, Melvin Holmes, Patricia Harris and Sadie Phillips, all of Gaffney.
Services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Michael Bridges, assisted by Dr. Larry Brooks and the Rev. Roderick Oglesby. Body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.

Ernest Burr Sr.
Suburban Propane retiree
Ernest "Spuregon" Burr Sr., 94, of Gaffney, formerly of Charlotte, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital Hospice surrounded by family and loved ones.
Mr. Burr was born Oct. 6, 1910, to the late Sanford Burr and the late Martha Baucom Burr. He began his career with Mecklenburg Iron Works and retired from Suburban Propane after 20 years of service as a welder.
Farming and sharing the harvest was one of his greatest joys. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Surviving are three sons, Carl Burr of Fayetteville, N.C., Allen Burr of York and Ernest Burr Jr. of Gaffney; six daughters, Lucille Faircloth, Margie Matthews, both of Stedman, N.C., Macey Lester of Simpsonville, Patty Hirsch, Janet Honeycutt and Virginia Burr, all of Charlotte; a stepdaughter, Jean Kent of Nashville, Tenn.; 28 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Florence McCall, Lottie Bartlett and Audrey Helms; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Burr was preceded in death by two daughters, Beatrice Johnson and Juanita Ann Jones; and a son, James Harold Burr; seven grandchildren; five sisters, Johnnie Helms, Bundie Norkett, Callie Stilwell, Letha Starnes, Edna Stegall; and three brothers, Rex Burr, Clayton Burr and Ervin Burr.
Services were held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frank Cooper. Burial was in Sunset Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaffney, 1612 N. Limestone St., Gaffney, S.C.

Annie G. Forrest
Gaffney native
Annie Goudelock Gaffney Forrest, 87, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, in Bethesda North Hospital, Cincinnati.
Widow of Curtis Gaffney and Dave Forrest, she was born in Gaffney, a daughter of the late Leslie Bonner Goudelock and the late Ed Wilkins. She was a member of Springfield Baptist Church in Greenville and a former member of Limestone Baptist Church in Gaffney.
Surviving are two sons, James Curtis Gaffney of Cincinnati and Reginald Gaffney of Durham, N.C.; three daughters, Brenda Smith of Johnstown, Pa., Phyllis Gaffney of Norwalk, Conn., and Gwendolyn Gaffney of Cincinnati; two brothers, Al Franklin Wilkins and Wash Gene Wilkins, both of Gaffney; two sisters, Luvina Foster of Michigan and Lucy Goudelock; and four grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in The Gilmore Mortuary Chapel, conducted by Dr. John H. Corbitt. Burial will be in Limestone Cemetery.
