Indians ground Bulldogs’ offensive attack

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

On a third and 13 on Boiling Springs’ opening series, quarterback Brett Slater hit Josh Williamson for a first down.

It was just about the only thing the Gaffney defense did wrong all game.

“We put (Boiling Springs) in situations where they had to throw,” Gaffney defensive coordinator Dan Jones said. “We told the defensive backs they would have to throw the ball quick either on slants or screens.”

Jones said he blitzed two linebackers on most plays to put pressure on Slater, who completed just 12 of his 28 passes for a season-low 99 yards. He was also picked off five times. Slater had averaged more than 200 yards a game this season.

The Indians also limited the Boiling Springs’ running game to just 34 yards.

This was the second straight game the Indians’ defense failed to yield a point. In last week’s win, Billy Jennings returned an interception for Union’s only points.

“We were very pleased with the shutout,” Jones said. “A lot of times, the kids will come out excited and then have a little of a letdown. But the kids were ready to play the whole game.”

Even the substitutes.

Jones applauded the performances of reserves Talmadge Dover, Romeo Adams and J.B. Shippy.

“We are trying to develop depth, and they all played well,” he said.

Jones said he was also

pleased his unit is beginning to create turnovers.

“It’s something we’ve worked on in practice,” he said. “We want to put a helmet on people.”

Gaffney played without one of its top linemen, Greyson Gentry, who injured his back.
