From cosmetics to thyroid tests, from do-it-yourself home improvement tips to laser hair removal, the Upstate Carolina Medical Center Women’s Health Fair will broach serious health topics to everyday issues that face women.

Organizers are hoping it will help women simplify and improve their lives.

“Women want to be pampered,” said Shannon Wylie, Cardiopulmonary Director at UCMC.

There will be plenty of pampering during the health fair with cosmetic and hairstyle demonstrations and free massages and pedicures. There will also be models mingling through the health fair showing off new fashions and free inspections and cleanings by Hartzog’s Jewelers. Plenty of freebies and a souvenir gift from UCMC adds to the special treatment.

The pampering wouldn’t be complete without a free stuff-your-own potato and salad bar. For the men who attend along with the women, there will be a special room for them with their own food, television and magazines to keep them entertained.

It wouldn’t be a health fair without offering some valuable health tests, tips and advice. Women will be offered three costly tests at a fraction of the price. They can choose from one of the following tests for free: a complete blood count test, a thyroid function test or a cardiac risk profile. Women can choose to take the remaining tests for a cost of $10 each.

The health fair will also offer information on sleep assessments, smoking cessation, migraine studies, pulmonary function breathing tests and body fat analysis. The health department will be presenting information on AIDS/HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. Many doctors in a variety of fields will also be available for questions.

Organizers will also be distributing a universal medication form, a piece of paper everyone should carry at all times. It lists all current medications a person is taking and is used in cases of emergencies to ensure the best treatment.

Booths featuring local fitness centers and area churches will also be on hand. Miss Cherokee County and Miss Teen Cherokee County will also make an appearance. The health fair begins at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Gaffney. More than 50 booths are expected.
