Gaffney swimmers finish 3rd in region

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney High swimmers picked the right time to post their fastest times.

Twenty-five swimmers posted their best-ever times to help the Indians to a third place finish at the Region III4A meet on Saturday.

“It is quite an accomplishment considering we have the smallest number of swimmers,” Gaffney coach Joanne Abernathy said.

Fort Mill placed first with Northwestern second.

Brittany Martin, Brock Moss and Brady Ellis posted their top times in the 200-yard freestyle while Nathan Walsh swam a career best in the 200yard IM.

Caroline Wood, Jordi Mages, Morgan Hughey, Koyrn Matton, Jacob Pearsall and Cameron Bramlett had their best times in the 50-yard freestyle.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Martin and Walsh also posted their best-ever times.

Hughey, Matton, Pearsall, Carol Ann Prange, Cici Revels, Moss and Ellis had their best times in the other freestyle events.

Keri Bloomer, Revels, Wood and Chase Huskey posted personal bests in the 100-yard backstroke while girls’ 200yard freestyle and 400-yard freestyle relay teams set new personal marks.

Prange finished second in the 500-yard freestyle while Steven Wright placed third in the backstroke.

Hughey placed fourth overall in the 50-yard freestyle, and Bloomer finished fifth in the 200 and 100-yard backstroke events.

The Indians will now turn their attention to the Upperstate meet Saturday, Oct. 1, at the Westside Aquatic Club in Greenville.

Gaffney swimmers who have qualified for the Upperstate are Zach Guest, Brooks Mayson, Moss, Walsh, Wright, Ellis, Bloomer, Hughey, Martin, Matton, Prange, Morgan Robinson and Wood.
