¦ More than $7,000 worth of tools, guns, engine parts and miscellaneous items were stolen from a local residence, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office states.
A 42-year-old man told deputies someone entered his shop building on McGill Highway by prying open the door. Another building on the property was entered after someone broke the door. Approximately $100 in damage was done to the structures.
The burglaries occurred between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday.
¦ A Gaffney man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman nearly a year ago, according to a warrant at the Gaffney Police Department.
Gaffney Police Detective Lt. David Clary has charged Marcellus Barnett Ratchford, 37, of 630 W. Buford St., Gaffney, with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and grand larceny $5,000 or more.
Ratchford is accused of hitting a woman in her face near Granite Drive and Villa Drive on Nov. 19, 2004. The assault was considered aggravated because the woman required medical treatment.
Police also claim Ratchford stole a 1987 Chevy S10 during the same incident. The warrants for Ratchford’s arrest were signed Nov. 23, 2004.
¦ A woman accused of reckless driving was arrested after police found her unconscious in a motel room, a report at the Gaffney Police Department states.
Officer Jerry Smith has charged Rita R. Cook, 50, of 700 Overbrook Drive, Gaffney, with reckless driving. She has been released from the Cherokee County Detention Center on $440 bond.
Police were dispatched to Beech and Robinson streets at 5:15 p.m. Saturday in response to a call about a driver who had struck a curb, a report at the Gaffney Police Department states. The impact caused the vehicle’s front tire to burst, sending the vehicle spinning into a parking lot near Scomar. The vehicle almost hit a bicyclist and a tractortrailer before stopping.
Three people were in the vehicle, but fled the scene in different directions, according to the report.
Police contacted the owner of the vehicle and learned that Cook called the residence asking for a ride from the Commercial Hotel. Police located Cook unconscious inside a room at the Commercial Hotel.
Police transported Cook back to Beech and Robinson streets where she was identified by witnesses. She was examined at a hospital before being taken to the detention center.
¦ Police seized scales and several plastic bags containing marijuana from a 26year-old Gaffney man, a report at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office states.
Agent Christy Poole of the Cherokee County Metro Narcotics Unit has charged Kevin Dean Byers, of 201 Chandler Drive, Apt. 32 A, with 2nd or subsequent offense of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
The Narcotics Unit stopped a 1984 Chevy driven by Byers at Floyd Baker Boulevard and Gaffney Avenue on Oct. 14, the report states.
Police discovered several bags of marijuana in a shoe box after receiving consent to search the vehicle. Officers also found two bags of marijuana in Byers’ shirt pocket, according to the report.
¦ A Gaffney man was arrested after he allegedly stole a drink and a pack of cigarettes from the Kangaroo convenience store at 100 Shelby Hwy., Gaffney.
Robert Elijah Earls Jr., 43, of 138 McEntire Road, Blacksburg, is charged with petty larceny.
Earls is accused of stealing a drink out of a cooler before walking behind the counter and taking a pack of cigarettes. The items were worth $4.60.
¦ Police have arrested a Gaffney man exactly 13 years after the warrant against him was signed.
Scott Terrall Thompson is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, according to a warrant at the Gaffney Police Department.
Officer Lt. P.C. Cook signed the warrant Oct. 19, 1992. Police arrested Thompson last Wednesday.
Thompson is accused of using a knife to stab a man twice in the back at 221 Hill Street, Gaffney, on Oct. 18, 1992.
