THEIR VIEW Anderson County has already issued its directive that blue laws will be suspended for the holiday season. The city is likely to follow, as will neighboring towns and counties, if last year is any indication. In Pickens County, it won’t be necessary. Voters there did away with blue laws, that certain businesses cannot open until after 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, several years ago. Now in York County they’re talking about suspending the laws for a full year. But it seems if we’re going to do away with them for a month of shopping or, as in York County, on a one-year trial basis, why not do away with blue laws altogether? ... It just doesn’t make sense that if one enters a superstore that sells both groceries and grass seed, the former is allowed before 1:30 p.m. while the latter has to be left on the shelf until the magic hour. ... Amending the blue laws won’t mean church services are canceled due to lack of attendance. Neither will the mall doors opening at 10 a.m. keep anyone away from places of worship. If the earlier opening does keep someone away from church, it’s likely the hours of a store’s operation aren’t the real reason. ... Lawmakers should look at amending blue laws permanently.
