CHRISTMAS ISFOR KIDS
You can help put a smile on a local child’s face
More than 120 children received Christmas presents last year through contributions from local residents and businesses to The Gaffney Ledger’s annual fundraiser “Christmas Is For Kids.” Donors gave a record total of $15,637.93 in 2004 so children could select the clothes and toys they wanted for Christmas.
The Gaffney Ledger is once again sponsoring “Christmas Is For Kids” to help a long list of children who otherwise might not have a very merry holiday.
The Ledger will be accepting donations through Dec. 31. For every $100 raised, child will be taken on a shopping spree at Wal-Mart, a major donor and co-sponsor of the event.
“There are hundreds of children right here in Cherokee County who are truly in need,” Ledger Publisher Cody Sossamon said. “With your help, we can at least help them have a merry Christmas and buy some clothes they can use throughout the year. I wish each and every one of you could have been at Wal-Mart last year when 120 very polite and excited youngsters did their Christmas shopping. Most spent about half of their $100 limit on clothes and half on toys and games. A few bought all clothes and a few spent all of it on toys and games. The parents and grandparents were wonderful as well. The looks on their faces expressed heartfelt appreciation and their words reinforced that
reinforced that thanks. I told them that the ones who made it all possible were those who contributed the money.”
Nationwide fundraising efforts for Hurricane Katrina relief and other disasters have sapped funding for local charities, but Sossamon is counting on Cherokee County pulling through again this year to help underprivileged kids at Christmas.
“Last year we had a goal of approximately $7,500,” he said. “And as Christmas week rolled around we had less than $5,000 in contributions. But in the end we beat the old record and were able to help more than 100 children because of the kindness of Cherokee County. With your help I know we can do that again.”
The children are selected by the Department of Social Services along with the Salvation Army and the Disabilities and Special Needs Board.
