Landscaping highlights new facility

The new $1.7 million Limestone College Physical Education Center is surrounded by an extensive beautification project, highlighted by a lighted fountain which changes colors at night.

A landscaping design by LandArt Design Group, Inc. of Spartanburg will result in 845 individual trees, shrubs and plants being planted, with an additional 75 being planted along the walkway and emergency access road. In addition to the numerous beds created for the plantings, 35,000 square feet of sod was installed.

The architect at LandArt Design who worked with the college and developed the design was Chris Thompson, Limestone College executive vice president Dr. Charles Cunning said. The landscaper who implemented the design was Nicholson, Inc. of Wellford.

“The architect and the landscaper worked very cooperatively with the general contractor (Hines Construction Co. of Spartanburg) and the college to implement the very attractive landscaping around the new building,” Cunning said.

The plan resulted in over 30 different kinds of trees, shrubs, and plants.

The LandArt Design Group worked with the college in selecting the fountain, exterior benches, trash containers, and lighting.

Plans are in the works for a beautification project that will eventually tie the physical education center grounds in with the rest of the college campus.

HessAmerica worked with the college in selecting exterior, affordable, and attractive lighting.

“The college attributes the very attractive and pleasing landscaping to the cooperative working relationships between the subcontractors, the general contractor, and the college,” Cunning said.

Limestone College held a dedication ceremony for its new physical education center in late October. The structure is the first new building on campus in nearly 30 years.

More than 400 people attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 16,224 square-foot building. The center provides space for the college’s athletic training education program, a fitness center, a practice area for the men’s wrestling team, offices, and three classrooms. There are also locker rooms and shower facilities.
