A team of Gaffney High math wizards finished 7th overall in the First High School Math Contest held Nov. 12 at USC Upstate in Spartanburg.

Gaffney High math team members Ben Alexander, Jake Blanton, Sarah Hamrick, Amber Wray, Silas Copeland, and Tiffany Posey were among students from 14 high schools in the contest. Students and their teams competed for prizes, including 4year USC Upstate tuition vouchers for $1,000, 500 and $250, plaques, awards and Tshirts.

“Our goal is to stimulate interest in mathematics among high school students and to recognize those who exhibit exceptional talent,” said Dr. Rick Chow, chair of the Division of Math and Computer Science at USC Upstate.

The contest included a 90minute written exam and team relays. The written exam tested students’ knowledge in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, precalculus, trigonometry, counting, probability and number theory.

Schools then chose three students to participate in team relays in which contestants answered a series of questions against the clock. Students were not allowed to use calculators.

Gaffney High math team coaches are Mandy Painter and Gene Holland.

“It was a nice time,” Painter said. “It was a good opportunity for our students to test their math skills in a competition with students from other high schools.”

Summerville High School won the competition. Byrnes High School finished second.

Other high schools involved in the contest included Ben Lippen, York Comprehensive, Southside, Blue Ridge, Woodland, S.C. Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities, Cross Keys, Spartanburg, Williston-Elko, Summerville and Oakbrook Preparatory School.

The Gaffney High math team plans to compete in one or two more contests in the spring.
