Broadcaster’s contribution in humor book
Gaffney’s own WAGI-FM radio personality Dennis Fowler will be honored as a contributor to the latest humor book by Margaret Bigger on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Bible Factory Outlet.
“Churchgoers’ Chuckles Vol. 2” has stories from 18 denominations and 28 states and 150 contributors — including Fowler’s daughter Leighlan.
“I’ve been a writer since the 1980s,” Bigger said. “This is my 23rd book published. I’ve really done two kinds of books over the years. I used to work at a ministerial association and the pastors would all tell these hilarious wedding stories.”
The preachers would crack each other up, and Bigger had to twist a few arms to get permission to write down the anecdotes.
“I had to promise them anonymity, but finally they agreed to let me write some of the best ones down. My original plan was to write them for a magazine,” she said. “I asked the editor if I could have space at the bottom to request humorous stories from readers. Initially, the editor said no, but people began sending me their stories anyway. Over the years, the bridal stories gave way to many other memories about funny things happening at churches.”
While promoting her various books over the years, Bigger has done many television shows and radio shows. “I was on Sally Jesse Raphael and the Maury Povich shows,” she said. “And I’ve been on more radio shows than I can remember.”
This is how she met Fowler.
“We were broadcasting from the Southern Christmas Show one year and had Margaret on as a guest,” Fowler recalled. “She had her books for sale and we interviewed her about them. I remember she said she loved to hear great stories and so I shared one about my daughter Leighlan.”
Leighlan’s anecdote appears in the section of the book about passing on the faith to younger generations. While riding in the car with her mother, then 5year-old Leighlan asked, “Mama, why does the sun follow us?”
Kim Fowler replied, “Because God is up there.”
Leighlan added, “Well, it’s probably because He has remote control.”
“Leighlan is 10 now and she’s very excited about the book,” Fowler said. “I enjoyed meeting Margaret very much, and I’m honored that she’s asked me to be at the book signing.”
“Churchgoers’ Chuckles” isn’t the only book that Fowler has contributed to for Bigger.
“I also do collections history from life experiences,” she said. “Dennis’s grandmother-in-law, Maggie Fletcher Wood, had a tragic personal story in ‘The Great Depression How We Coped, Worked and Played’ but unfortunately she died before she could be honored when the book released in 2001. Gaffney’s A.L. Blackwood has shared stories with me of his experiences for ‘World War II Hometown and Home Front Heroes’, too.”
