SLED completes investigation of trooper
An investigation into allegations of sexual assault made against a S.C. Highway Patrolman is complete and the findings have been forwarded to the S.C. Attorney General’s Office for review.
Lt. Mike Brown of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has confirmed his office has completed the investigation. The results were sent to the Seventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
“Pursuant to my policy, the matter has been referred to the S.C. Attorney General’s Office,” said Seventh Circuit Solicitor Trey Gowdy. “I have been doing that since day one, and some of my colleagues have also adopted that policy.”
Gowdy continued by saying that when a police officer is investigated, he does not determine if any charges are applicable because he works with those officers on a daily basis and it would not engender confidence in the community.
The name of the trooper accused of sexually assaulting the woman Aug. 3 has not been released because there have been no legal actions taken against him, said Sid Gaulden, spokesman for the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.
According to a report filed at the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, the woman claims her husband hit and choked her at their home on River Drive in Gaffney. She left the home and went to the Kangaroo truck stop on Highway 18. She claims the trooper approached her at the Kangaroo and offered her assistance. The woman told sheriff’s deputies the trooper sexually assaulted her near the Peachoid water tower at 2 a.m.
