Gaffney boys’ basketball coach Mark Huff probably wishes all his victories came as easily as his 300th coaching win on Thursday.

Daniel Mitchell scored 18 points and Kobe Hollis had 14 as the 3-time defending champions evened their record at 11 with an easy 90-62 win over Union.

The Indians were coming off an awful shooting performance in their season-opening loss to Spartanburg on Tuesday.

“I thought we definitely shot the ball better,” Huff said. “I thought we got some good off our break.”

Huff also praised the play of his reserves, especially Norvert Haney, Ty Dawkins and Jeff Brown.

“They got a chance to play and did well,” he said.

The Yellow Jackets gave the Indians plenty of chances to score by committing 39 turnovers.

Haney and Dawkins both hit three-pointers to help the Indians stretch their lead to 26-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Yellow Jackets made a run to pull within 28-21 but the Indians answered quickly with an 18-8 run to grab a 46-29 advantage at the half. The Indians opened the extend their cushion to 58-47 on a Robert Butler layup.

Daniel Mitchell’s threepointer made it 73-47 with 6:19 left in the fourth quarter.

Trevor Booker paced Union with 30 points.

In girls’ action, Breanna Watkins had 12 points and Shirley Armstrong and Tiffany Posey each scored 11 as the Gaffney Lady Indians beat Union, 55-33.

The Lady Indians, who improve to 1-1, outscored Union 19-11 in the pivotal third quarter before breaking the game open with a run midway through the fourth quarter.

Gaffney will host Byrnes on Tuesday.
