Blacksburg defensive coordinator retires from post

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

LANE CARTER LANE CARTER The Blacksburg Wildcats will have a new defensive coordinator next season.

Longtime assistant Lane Carter has announced his retirement from coaching, Blacksburg head football coach and director of athletics Robbie Blanton said.

Carter has been part of Blanton’s staff for six years. He also served as wide receivers and linebackers coach before being named defensive coordinator two years ago.

Carter, who coached the girls’ varsity basketball team, also served on former coach Johnny Gibson’s football staff.

“Lane wants to spend more time with his church and family,” Blanton said. “He’s such a

good person to have around the team. His loyalty and morals are second to none.”

Blanton said he could promote an existing assistant to defensive coordinator or hire a new one.

“We are looking for a new defensive coordinator,” he said. “There is a possibility of naming a person on our staff but I would still need a new coach.”

Blanton said he doesn’t anticipate any other changes on his staff.

The Wildcats finished the season at 1-10 the team’s third straight losing season.
