BRETT IRVIN BRETT IRVIN Gaffney High School should be a popular destination the next few week for college recruiters.

As many as seven seniors on this year’s state champion team may sign college scholarships.

But only Julius Wilkerson and Brett Irvin have received firm offers from schools, Gaffney High football coach Phil Strickland said.

Wilkerson, a Shrine Bowler who led the team with 111 solo tackles and had 15 tackles for losses, has verbally committed to play at Clemson.

Irvin, another Shrine Bowler, has scholarship offers from Presbyterian and Gardner Webb. Appalachian State, which will play for the Division I-AA national championship, has expressed an interest in Irvin but has yet to extend an offer.

Irvin has also visited Furman and Wofford.

“There is a lot of talking going on now,” Strickland said. “But there aren’t a lot of concrete offers.”

Cameron Tate, who played in Saturday’s North-South All-Star Game, is garnering attention from Middle Tennessee State. Tate is also a talented special teams performer.

Quinton Hemphill, who rushed for 1,202 yards on 176 carries, is expected to have his pick of several junior college offers.

CAMERON SMITH CAMERON SMITH East Carolina and South Carolina State have expressed an interest in defensive lineman Clay Champion, who had 41 tackles, including 21 for losses, for the Indians.

Offensive tackle Cameron Smith, who was named to the all-region team, is being looked at by Gardner Webb.

The Bulldogs as well as Presbyterian College have also expressed an interest in inside linebacker Bryce Smiley, who was second on the team in solo tackles and third in tackles for losses.
