Ledger photo by TARA JENNINGS The accident occurred at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday about a mile south of the North Carolina state line near Grassy Pond Creek Road. Two people were flown by Regional One to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after being involved in a head-on collision on Boiling Springs Highway (Highway 150) at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday.
John M. Fitzgerald, 44, of Falston, N.C., was traveling north in a 1975 Ford pickup when he attempted to pass on a double-yellow line on the crest of a hill and struck a southbound 1998 Mercury head-on, said Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Fitzgerald and the driver of the Mercury, Ashley L. McBee of 210 Coyle Road, Gaffney, were airlifted to the Spartanburg hospital, McDougald said.
Fitzgerald was cited for reckless driving, the trooper said. Fitzgerald was not wearing a seat belt, McDougald said. McBee was properly restrained.
The investigation is continuing. The speed of the vehicles has not yet been determined. It occurred in a 55 mph zone.
