Marquintus Jones and his Limestone teammates will face a tall task today when they travel to Greenville, N.C. to play Division I foe East Carolina. Coming off a lengthy Christmas break, the Limestone College Saints will face their stiffest challenge of the season Wednesday against Division I foe East Carolina.

Limestone will play East Carolina at 7 p.m. in Greenville, N.C. It is the Saints first game since an 86-73 loss to Wingate University on Dec. 17.

East Carolina, a Conference USA team, has struggled out of the gate with a 3-6 overall record.

Yet the Pirates will provide a lot of matchup problems for Limestone College as it plays a rare Division I opponent.

“East Carolina will be a great challenge for us. Their size, quickness and athleticism is superior to us,” said Epperly, who is close friends with one of the East Carolina coaches. “Our players will have to play really good to have a chance to win.”

Limestone College enters the East Carolina game with a 3-5 record.

Point guard Shawn Poppie and guard Marquintus Jones are the only returning starters from last season. Poppie had a game-high 22 points and 18 rebounds in Limestone’s loss to Wingate.

“Conditioning is always a concern when you go several days without playing a game. It’s really important to get off to a good start when you are playing against a quality opponent like East Carolina,” Epperly said.

Limestone must improve its shooting percentage and do a better job defensively inside to have a chance at an upset over East Carolina.

After returning home, Limestone will play one more nonconference game before playing 18 straight conference games.

Epperly hopes to settle on a starting lineup soon.

“We have no rhythm on offense. We have used a new starting lineup just about every game. We are struggling at the center position,” Epperly said. “We have been in every game. We just haven’t been able to close out games. When you play against a team like East Carolina, you really find out who does well in games against quality opponents.”
