Police continue investigation of fatal accident
The S.C. Highway Patrol multi-disciplinary accident investigation team (MAIT) is continuing to evaluate a fatal accident that occurred Tuesday in Blacksburg.
Donald Ray Deaton, 60, of 231 Tucker Road, Blacksburg, was killed in the head-on collision on Rutherford Street about a half-mile east of the town limits shortly after 5 p.m.
Deaton was the passenger in an eastbound 1994 Chevy S-10 pickup driven by 36year-old Melvin A. Jolly of 284 Blackwell Road, Blacksburg, said Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the Highway Patrol. Jolly’s vehicle collided with a westbound 1986 Ford pickup driven by 43-year-old Kathy Stapleton of 200 Byers Circle, Blacksburg. Stapleton had a 5-year-old passenger in her vehicle.
The MAIT team is investigating to determine which vehicle first crossed the center line, police said.
