Saints upend Bobcats
COLIN POND Two newcomers are making a difference for the Limestone Saints.
Former Spartanburg Methodist star Terrell Smith scored a season-high 23 points and redshirt freshman Andre Coleman added 15 to help the Saints improve to 8-7 in the conference with an 85-72 win over visiting Lees McRae on Monday.
“I thought we executed well,” Limestone coach Larry Epperly said. “Terrell and Andre were able to make some shots.”
Smith was especially hot late with 11 points in the final 10 minutes of the game, including a three-pointer that extended the Saints’ lead to 82-71.
Point guard Shawn Poppie had 17 points, including four threepointers, for the Saints.
The Saints hit their first four threepointers lead. The margin grew to as many as 16 points seven minutes into the game.
The Bobcats went on a spurt to pull within 48-37 at the break.
James Barbee’s hoop trimmed the Saints’ deficit to 56-50 with 13 minutes left in the game. But Coleman answered with a stickback and Poppie hit a three to put the Saints ahead 61-50.
Center Colin Pond put an exclamation point on the victory with a reverse slam in the game’s waning moments.
Henry Williams had 16 points to pace the Bobcats, who fall to 4-11 in the conference.
“Lees McRae had some quick guards,” Epperly said. “Their quickness bothered us. We just couldn’t find an answer to that.”
Limestone shot 60 percent from the field in the second half, up from 45 percent in the first half.
The Bobcats did grab 17 offensive rebounds.
The Saints will host Coker on Saturday.
