Woman dies day after her 4-wheeler overturns

A Gaffney woman died Monday from injuries suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident Sunday in the Macedonia community, about eight miles west of Gaffney.

Karen Ivey, 48, of 131 Greenfield Road, died at 3:47 p.m. at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Ivey was driving a 1991 Honda ATV north on Swofford Drive at 3:25 p.m. Sunday when she drove off the roadway into a ditch, causing the vehicle to overturn, said Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the S.C. Highway Patrol. Ivey and her son, 21-year-old Brian Ivey of Wellford, were both thrown from the ATV. Neither was wearing a helmet, the officer said.

Ivey was unresponsive when medics arrived and was believed to be suffering from a head injury. She was transported by ambulance to SRMC.

The Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident. Troopers have not yet determined the speed of the ATV. The Macedonia Volunteer Fire Department also responded.
