Nathan Dixon won’t soon forget his first outing of the season on Monday.

The Blacksburg hurler struck out a state recordtying 15 in tossing a no-hitter as the Wildcats beat Carolina, 10-0, in a game shortened to five innings at the Carolina Preseason Tournament.

Dixon ties the 15-strikeout effort by Robert Pollard of Hanahan in 1994.

“His fastball was really working well,” Blacksburg coach Toby Elliott said.

The Wildcats would score all the runs Dixon would need in the bottom of the first when Cameron Byars and Gary Gaut scored on errors.

In the second, Jesse Hardin made it 3-0 after reaching on an error, stealing second and scoring on a passed ball.

Brent Humphries increased the Wildcats’ lead to 5-0 with a two-run homer in the third.

Josh Elmore had two RBIs when the Wildcats put the game away with five runs in the fourth.

Dustin Byars was 2 for 2 for the Wildcats, who will play Southside on Wednesday.

“Unlike in years past when we were trying to find out where to play people, this year we are just trying to win games,” Elliott said.
