'Lacrosse House' altercation
In the nearly five weeks since an altercation at the residence commonly known as the "Lacrosse House" left a Limestone College baseball player hospitalized, authorities have conducted 15 informal and formal interviews.
No charges have been filed but that could change if another baseball player who has been silent agrees to talk to authorities, said Detective Sgt. Billy Odom Jr. of the Gaffney Police Department.
"It's 50-50 (if charges will be filed)," Odom said. "We have one new person we want to talk to but he doesn't seem to want to talk to me."
Odom declined to identify the baseball player. The baseball player's statement could corroborate the story of another witness who identified the person who allegedly beat a defenseless Limestone baseball player.
"I'm trying to identify the kid who kicked (the baseball player) when he was on the ground," Odom said. "He's the only person who will be charged."
According to a police report, officers discovered 22-year-old Jason Gold of Shelby, N.C., lying in the road, bleeding from one of his ears. Gold, one of the team's best pitchers, was taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for a head injury.
Two players on the lacrosse team were also injured, one of whom required stitches.
At least one member of the wrestling team and some former Limestone wrestlers were involved in the altercation, according to some accounts of the incident.
Odom said the number of conflicting stories from witnesses, many of whom were intoxicated, has made the investigation difficult.
"No two interviews have been the same," he said. "We've had trouble identifying suspects."
Shortly after the incident, Limestone College President Dr. Walt Griffin announced that no student athletes will be allowed to reside at the "Lacrosse House." The three students who lived there have moved on campus.
Griffin said the college has worked closely with the police.
"We are still taking statements," he said. "We know there was a conflict going on throughout the evening. And there were three outbursts."
As a result of the school's investigation, one student has withdrawn from school and another appeared before the school's Judicial Board and is serving an unspecified sentence, Griffin said. He declined to identify the students.
Griffin said the college will take follow-up action if charges are filed.
