Employees plan yard sale

The March of Dimes and Magnolia Finishing Plant are teaming up to prove that one man's trash is another's treasure. And they hope that babies all over South Carolina can benefit from the efforts.

As part of the ongoing fundraising across the county for the 2006 March of Dimes WalkAmerica, Magnolia employees will be having a yard sale Saturday.

"We're calling it 'Bargains for Babies' but we'll have a huge assortment of things for sale," said Magnolia Plant Manager John Kellam. "The collection of things up for grabs comes from all of our employees we've had people bringing in stuff for a while now. There'll be golf clubs, bicycles, furniture, lots of books, children's clothing, adult clothing and shoes. We have a washer and dryer and all kinds of toys."

The event will take place between 7:30 a.m. and noon at Shears' Courtyard, 450 E. Cherokee Ave. in Blacksburg.

"Normally that place is used for reunions and sometimes weddings," Kellam said. "But since it is owned by two of our employees and they've agreed to let us use it for free, I thought the price was right for our event. There are close to 500 people at our location, so the sale is going to be big."

The event isn't the first time Magnolia has helped out the March of Dimes.

"The company has supported the March of Dimes for quite some time," Kellam added. "And we've raised more than $75,000 over the past three years. The sale will be in the parking lot, but if there's rain we'll move it indoors."
