Nance enters race for District 4 BPW commissioner seat

ALICE NANCE ALICE NANCE A woman whose face is familiar to many Cherokeeans has decided to toss her hat into the ring for the District 4 Gaffney Board of Public Works seat being vacated by Brenda Earls.

Alice Jones Nance, who has worked at the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce for 45 years, announced today that she will enter the race.

Nance attended public schools in Cherokee County. She received a B.A. Degree from Limestone College.

In addition to her duties with the Chamber, she has also worked for the Cherokee County Development Board for 32 years. The two agencies share the same building on South Limestone Street.

Nance serves on the Limestone College Alumni Association Board of Directors.

She is also the treasurer at Buford Street United Methodist Church, where she sings in the choir and serves on the Kitchen Committee.

"I would consider it an honor to serve as a commissioner of the Board of Public Works," she said. "I seek your support as I undertake this endeavor. The Board of Public Works has been efficiently managed and I want to help this continue with affordable reliable services.

"Having worked with the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce and the Cherokee County Development Board, I know the importance of industrial and residential customer-based services and I want to be able to help the Board of Public Works recruit and maintain good quality customers."

Nance's father, J. Conrad Jones, served as Cherokee County Clerk of Court for 21 years. He retired from that post to accept the position of executive vice president of M&P Bank, which was subsequently bought by C&S Bank, from which Jones retired.

Nance's husband, Bobby G. Nance Sr., retired from Phil-Chem as a textile sales and technical representative.

The couple has two children and two grandchildren. They reside in College Park in Gaffney.

Nance joins former Board of Public Works commissioner Warren Bonner and former BPW Electrical Department Superintendent Fred Keller on the Aug. 8 ballot.

Earls has announced she will not seek re-election.
