Gaffney's Josh Gallman and his teammates will play in the Georgia/South Carolina Cup today and Saturday. For the Gaffney golf team, there will be more on the line than just team and individual championships at this weekend's Georgia/South Carolina Cup.

The Indians will also be playing for state pride.

The top 12 prep golf powers from each state will be squaring off in the 36-hole, 2day event, which begins today at Cross Creek Plantation in Seneca.

"There will be a state winner, too," Gaffney coach Mark Ireton said.

South Carolina claimed bragging rights a year ago, with Easley winning the team competition.

Four golfers will participate from each team. All four scores will be totaled to determine the individual medalist, team champion and state winner.

The prep golf powers from South Carolina include Gaffney, Chapin, Dutch Fork, Sumter, T.L. Hanna, Dorman, A.C. Flora and Easley.

North View, Centennial and Peachtree Ridge high schools are among the schools scheduled to compete from Georgia.

The Indians enter this weekend's event off an impressive performance against Dorman at Carolina Country Club.

Josh Gallman, Brandon Coggins, Matthew Hopper and Jody Martin will be playing for the Indians.

"They are all capable of playing well," Ireton said. "We just need for all of them to be playing well together."

The 6,650-yard course will be challenging.

"It's a long, difficult course," Ireton said.

"Of course we would like to win it," he said. "But we'd like to finish in the top 10 of the 24 schools."
