Indians top Northwestern
Gaffney's Jordan Propst touches home plate during a two-run sixth-inning. The Gaffney baseball team has found itself inflicted with a contagious habit this season winning games.
Despite being outhit, the Indians made the most of their scoring opportunities to beat visiting Northwestern, 7-5, on Friday and remain in first place with a 6-1 mark.
"We took advantage of their mistakes," Gaffney coach Tom Owens said.
Especially in the first inning when the Indians struck for five runs. After McCrae Norton singled and Justin Sarratt and Stephen Kaemmerlen each walked to load the bases, Jake Watson hit a comebacker to the mound which was booted by the Northwestern pitcher, allowing two runs to score. Dylan Jolley then doubled home two more runs before scoring himself on an error charged to catcher Dan Keener.
Watson allowed five hits and three earned runs to pick up the win. He struck out five in five innings.
Sarratt went two innings and struck out six. Northwestern scored two runs in the seventh on two hits, a dropped third strike and a balk. Sarratt got out of the jam by striking out Keener to end the game.
The Trojans answered the Indians' five-spot in the first with three runs in the top of the second. Keener opened the inning with a double and scored on Tyler Lehman's double. Jamie Holler then doubled and scored on Matt Mitchell's single.
The Indians scored two runs to extend their lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth. Watson singled to lead off the inning before John Michaels reached on an error and Jordan Propst beat out an infield single to load the bases.
After Watson was forced out at home on a grounder off the bat of Shane Mills, Norton had another big hit with a solid two-run single.
The Trojans responded to the Indians' fiverun first with three runs in the second inning.
Watson doubled and singled and Norton had two singles for the Indians, who improve to 14-2 overall.
Gaffney plays Rock Hill today and Lancaster on Tuesday.
