JAMES DAVIS The Gaffney boys' track team got the unexpected Friday at the Raider Relays at Laurens High School impressive performances from its younger runners.
The Indians were missing Tyson Petty and Charles Smith, but youngsters like Timmy Foster, Dennis Dawkins and Justin Roberts replaced the stars and helped to lead Gaffney to a first-place finish in the 7-team event.
Foster and Dawkins helped Cameron Tate and Brian Oldham to a second-place finish in the 4x200 relay. Foster, along with Kennard Lipscomb, Darius Dawkins and Brian Makeupson finished second in the 4x400 relay.
Oldham, Roberts, Mark Tate and Cameron Tate placed first in the 4x100 relay, while Kevin Ross, Antonio Lipscomb and Kennard Lipscomb crossed the line first in the 4x800 relay.
In the distance medley event, which included a different relay member running in the 800, 400, 1200 and 1600 meters, Gaffney's Derrick Burgess, Antonio Lipscomb, Eagle and Ross finished first.
The Indians also performed well in the field events, as Shane Phillips, Sherrod Lipscomb and Bryce Smith finished third in the discus.
Phillips was also part of the relay team that placed second in the high jump and third in the long jump.
Mark Tate and Julian Fowler were the other members of those relay teams.
"I was very happy with the results," Gaffney coach James Davis said. "We had to rely on some younger kids and they stepped up."
The Lady Indians finished third in the girls' competition.
