improve to 12-1

After beating Union 5-4 in a shootout, the improving Gaffney girls' soccer team fell 3-1 to York in the Quad County Union Soccer Tournament on Saturday.

Kristi Caldwell had the team's lone goal. Caldwell had two goals in regulation against Union and added another one in the shootout. Diana Perry and Paris Colemorgan also scored for the Lady Indians.

"I attribute the win to great defensive play and experience in shoot out games," Gaffney coach Mark Fahling said.

He praised the defensive effort of Perry, Holly Wolf and Colemorgan.

Erin Peeler also played well on defense, according to the coach.

Conference-leading Barton took the rubber game of the three-game series with Limestone with a 12-1 victory on Sunday.

Jason Gold got the loss for the Saints. Rob Bouknight had the Saints' lone RBI.

The teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.

Kevin Pucetas allowed just six hits and David Wise and Paul Pesca each went 4 for 5 in the Saints' 12-8 win in the first game.

Wise and Pesca both hit homers.

In the second game, Matt Reel and Wise went 3 for 4 but it wasn't enough as Barton earned the split with an 8-7 victory.

Saints' reliever Daniel Phillips got the loss.

Brandon Bevis earned the win and Quinshad Davis had two hits, including a home run and three RBIs, in the Elks' 8-6 win over ICR.

Bevis also helped his own cause with a hit.

Jake Turner and James Ham also hit safely for the winners.

Josh Mathis had a three-run homer in a losing effort.

The par-3, 17th hole at Cherokee National has become one of Cherokee County Development Board Executive Director Jim Inman's favorite golf holes.

Inman aced the 165-yard hole Sunday with a 6-iron while playing with Carlisle Hamrick, Wayne Goforth and Danner Abernathy.

It's Inman's third hole-in-one and the second time he's recorded a 1 at the Cherokee National 17th hole. He aced the same hole four years ago.

His other hole-in-one came at The University Club.

The Gaffney junior varsity baseball team improved to 12-1 with a pair of wins over York and victories over Spartanburg and Northwestern last week.

Matt Lester went six innings and Tommy Strickland earned the save in the Indians' 4-2 win Monday over York.

On Tuesday, Brandon Clopton pitched a complete game in the team's 11-2 win over the Cougars.

Matt Harris went six innings and Strickland pitched three in the Indians' 8-6, nine-inning win over the Vikings.

Rober Davidson had the gamewinning hit. Bubba Wright also had a three-run double in the game.

Gaffney scored three runs in the fifth and Bobby Jackson tossed a complete game as the Indians edged Northwestern 4-2.
