Boat sinks; all
28 aboard survive
HILTON HEAD ISLAND - A touring boat with 28 people on board sank Saturday afternoon in the Calibogue Sound. All on board were rescued.
A passing boat picked up the passengers and crew of the Coconut Woman shortly after the boat went down around 1:45 p.m., the Coast Guard said.
Six of the passengers needed medical assistance for mild hypothermia while the other 22 people were in good condition,
The Coast Guard is advising all boats to steer clear of the sound because the sunken vessel poses a hazard to navigation.
Suspect shot
by officers
GREENWOOD - A suspect in a shooting exchanged gunfire with police and was shot at least once, authorities say.
The suspect, whose name was not released, shot another man at a Greenwood apartment complex Saturday afternoon, police said.
Officers saw the shooting suspect a short time later speeding through town. When they tried to pull him over, he got out, pointed a gun at police and started shooting, Greenwood Police Chief Gerald Brooks said.
The officers fired back, and the suspect was hit at least once and was taken to the hospital, Brooks said.
No one else was injured, but a Greenwood County deputy's car was hit with at least five bullets, with one of them lodging in the back seat only inches away from a passenger, authorities said.
The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the shooting because it involved police officers.
The victim in the first shooting also was taken to the hospital, authorities said.
Divers fish 10
cars out of river
CHARLESTON - Charleston County Sheriff's divers spent Saturday fishing cars out of the Stono River.
The divers were retrieving about 10 submerged cars, likely stolen, near the Sol Legare boat landing.
Authorities discovered the auto reef March 8 while retrieving the body of 36year-old John Wilson, a passenger in a car that went into the water that morning. The car's driver, Robby Dean Jett, 38, of Union, was charged with felony driving under the influence. Divers used sonar imaging to find the wrecks. Air bags and nylon tow ropes lifted the rusted hunks from the water, said diver Mike Ringley. The water was 50 degrees, and visibility was about 2 feet, he said.
''You never know what you're going to find,'' Ringley said. ''It's like a box of chocolates down there.''
