Accident leaves shingles dumped on road, ties up traffic for about an hour
Emergency workers clean up shingles which spilled onto Highway 11 Saturday afternoon when this Ford 6-wheel pickup truck overturned after being struck on the driver's side by a 2000 Kia driven by Ted Mahaffey of Gaffney, the S.C. Highway Patrol said. A Saturday afternoon accident left part of Highway 11 covered with used shingles for about an hour.
Ted Mahaffey, 41, of Gaffney, is charged with driving left of center in the 2 p.m. accident at Highway 11 and Twin Bridge Road, said Lance Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
No one was injured in the 2-vehicle accident.
Mahaffey was driving east in a 2000 Kia when he drove left of center and struck a 1987 Ford 6-wheel pickup truck driven by J.B. Philbeck, 51, of Gaffney, McDougald said.
The impact caused Philbeck to lose control of his truck and overturn near the Gaffney Ford auto dealership, McDougald said. The truck spilled a load of shingles.
"One lane of traffic was blocked for approximately an hour while they cleaned it up," McDougald said.
Neither driver was injured.
Both Mahaffey and Philbeck were wearing their seat belts.
There were no passengers in the vehicles.
Troopers estimate Philbeck was traveling 35 mph and Mahaffey was traveling 45 mph. The speed limit in that area is 35 mph.
