Petty leads Indian track team to top spot at McDonald's meet

Tyson Petty did just about everything for the Gaffney boys' track team at the McDonald's Classic at Union on Thursday.

Petty captured the 100 meters and was a member of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams, in leading the Indians to the classic title. He also earned points in the field events, taking fourth in the long jump.

Clinton finished second in the nine-team field.

Petty ran the 100 in 10.6. He joined Cameron Tate, Brian Oldham and Charles Smith to place first in the 4x100 meters in a time of 42.5. Brian Makeupson, Kennard Lipscomb and Dennis Dawkins were the other members of the 4x400 relay team.

The Indians relay team of Derrick Burgess, Everett Ross, Antonio Lipscomb and Kennard Lipscomb also won the 4x800 meters in a time of 9:02.

Smith captured the 400 meters in 51.5. Dawkins was fourth and Antonio Lipscomb placed fifth in the event.

Ross was second in the 800 meters while Shane Phillips placed third in the mile.

Oldham placed fifth in the long jump.

"It was a great showing by the team," Gaffney coach James Davis said.

The Indians will travel to Lancaster for a meet today. The region meet is slated for Thursday at Northwestern High School.
