Gamecock Club
banquet May 11
The Spartanburg-Cherokee County Gamecock Club Spring Banquet is scheduled for Thursday, May 11, at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium.
The dinner will begin at 5:30, with the program to begin at 7.
Guest speakers will be coach Steve Spurrier, coach Ken Potosnak and administrative staff.
Ticket cost is $20 per dinner. Tickets for all ages and must be purchased by May 8.
Tickets for the event can be picked up at the Sub Station, Harold Restaurant, Dr. Hank Jolly's office, Chamber of Commerce or by calling Mike Phillips at 488-3730, Ed Poole 489-8746 or Randy Hammett 4893839. Speaker only tickets may be purchased at the door for $10.

The Limestone women's lacrosse team received an NCAA Division II bid and will play West Chester in the tournament in a semifinal.
Limestone, ranked sixth in the nation, has a 16-3 record and captured the conference tournament title. Adelphi and C.W. Post will meet in the other tournament semifinal.
Literacy Association
to hold golf tourney
The Cherokee County Literacy Association will hold a charitable golf tournament at Cherokee National Golf Course on Friday, June 9, starting at noon. The proceeds from this tournament will be used to teach local adults how to read. The tournament's format will be captain's choice with prizes going to the first gross and net low scores. Four-person team sponsors are $240, single players $60 each, and hole sponsorships are $100 each.
The mission of the Literacy Association, which is a nonprofit, United Way agency, is to teach adult illiterate citizens of Cherokee County how to read. About one out of four adults in Cherokee County cannot read or have problems reading simple documents. If you or your company is interested in playing in the tournament, sponsoring a golf hole, or making a donation, contact the Literacy Association at (864) 4872707.

Tryouts for Post 109 American League team will begin on Monday, May 8 at 6 p.m. at Commissioners Field. You must bring your original birth certificate. Only players born on or after Jan. 1, 1987 are eligible to
play.
Josh Moss and Bubba Wright tossed a 2-hitter as the Board of Public Works blanked Classic Windows, 14-0, in Babe Ruth action last week. Jared Teague had three hits, including a triple, while Moss had three hits, Wright doubled, Troy Perry singled, Brian Price doubled and Michael Wright and Kyle Byars' each singled.
The BPW also shut out Rotary, 13-0. In that game, Moss, Tommy Strickland and McCrae Norton threw a combined no-hitter.
Norton doubled and homered while Teague had two hits, Bubba Wright had two hits and Moss and Michael Wright each had a hit.
In Major League action, Kelly Manning struck out 11 and Brett Curtis homered as Wachovia beat the Elk's 9-4. Tyler Moss, Caleb Patterson and Hayden Bunch were the defensive standouts.
Church plans

The Buffalo Baptist Church will hold a golf tournament on May 26 at River Bend Golf Course. Proceeds will go to the church's building fund. The cost is $45 a player and $180 a team. Hole sponsors are needed. For more information, call 864-8392189 or email btprice@liberty.edu
