City considers offers on property
The City of Gaffney Land Forfeited Commission has managed to reduce the city's delinquent property taxes from $600,000 to $33,000 over the past three years.
The commission met Wednesday afternoon to review two offers for property the city now owns because of past-due taxes.
A mortgage company has offered to purchase a vacant lot off Hetty Hill Street for $600.80. A church is interested in purchasing another property near Limestone College.
Commission members agreed to negotiate a sale price with the two parties in an effort to recover the city's costs.
"We are better off selling the properties and keeping them on our tax rolls," Gaffney Administrator James Taylor said.
The city's other remaining delinquent properties are worth $30,800.
The properties are located on Brittany Road, Oakland Avenue, Richardson Street, Pace Street, Hill Street and First Avenue.
The city will place "For Sale" signs on the properties in an effort to recover their costs.
Commission members are Brodie Cook, Ginny Cook, Johnny Little and Taylor.
