Indians begin summer school
Rodney Love is one of five returning players for coach Mark Huff's basketball team. Gaffney varsity boys' basketball coach Mark Huff knows how to get his team back on top.
Practice, practice, practice.
The Indians will begin their busy summer program with skill development drills on June 12.
Later in June, the Indians will travel once again to the Lander University Team Camp.
The three-day camp will end on June 25.
"This is a good camp and it gives us enough time to practice a few days before it starts," Huff said.
A week later, the Indians will be staying closer to home at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Team Camp at Limestone College.
"You know you will play good people at the camp," Huff said. "We'll play eight games and it gives us a chance to play a lot of kids."
After a week off for the July 4 holiday, the Indians return to the court the second week of July for the Byrnes High Shootout.
Even though the main focus is to improve as a team, Huff said the summer is also a time to evaluate his players.
"We have some openings this year," he said. "The summer will show who will get the jobs. What we try to do is to put together the best team we can."
Rodney Love, Malcolm Long, Richard Good, Norvert Haney and Robert Butler are the returning players for the Indians.
"We'll have seven openings (on the roster)," Huff said. "We'll be pretty inexperienced. But the summer gives us a chance to evaluate the younger kids and see who we want to bring up."
