Indians strive for balance

"Our offense is going to be a lot like it was for the last six games of last season," said Lawson on Thursday, the first day of spring drills for the defending Big 16 state champions. "We will try to be balanced and establish the run."
That may be a little more difficult to accomplish this season with the wholesale departures along the offensive line and at running back. Kevin Brockman is the only returning starter along the offensive line. Rising junior Robbie Peterson was a starter at the beginning of the season before season-ending knee surgery.
There is no returning starter at running back.
"We are going to have to find personnel there," Lawson said.
Look for tight end Richard Good, who is recovering from torn ankle ligaments, to have a bigger role in the offense this year. The talented Good has the ability to catch the football and break tackles.
"We'll get him more involved with play action," Lawson said.
The Indians are loaded with returning receivers, including Terry Barnes and Tyson Petty, two stars of the state championship game, and Mark Tate.
Lawson said he's pleased with the progress of returning quarterback Malcolm Long.
"This is the hardest that Malcolm has worked in the offseason," Lawson said. "He's running, lifting and conditioning. I feel good about where he is at."
The coaching staff spent Thursday's session timing the players in four events the 40-yard dash, the 10-yard square and pro-shuttle.
