Seven applicants to be interviewed

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Sports Editor larry@gaffneyledger.com

Gaffney High Principal Dr. Quincie Moore knows what she wants from her next girls' basketball coach.

"I want somebody who will put a good product on the court everyday," Moore said.

Moore is getting closer to finding that somebody.

Moore said she and athletic director Phil Strickland will likely interview as many as seven candidates for the position, which became vacant with the resignation earlier this month of Roger Patterson.

Moore said an in-house candidate as well as another applicant were interviewed last week. Three more candidates were interviewed on Wednesday. Two more candidates will likely be interviewed

next week, the Gaffney High principal said.

Some of the candidates have prior head coaching experience on the varsity level.

"It varies," she said. "Some have prior head coaching experience either with the boys or girls and some don't."

Moore, a former girls' basketball coach, said she's been aggressive in the interview process.

"I want to know their style of play and their coaching philosophy," she said.

Moore said she could have a recommendation for the school board as early as next week.

"I've been pleased with the quality of candidates," she said.

The Lady Indians have averaged just five wins during the last three seasons.
