A-tax requests exceed resources

By LARRY HILLIARD Ledger Staff Writer larry@gaffneyledger.com

Local tourist-related organizations hope they meet little resistance when they request funds today from the City of Gaffney Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee.

But some groups will likely be disappointed. The A-tax, a surcharge on motel fees in the city, generated $30,000 last year. But the requests for funding total $105,870. The money must be spent on tourist-related organizations or activities, in accordance with state guidelines.

It's the tax advisory committee's job to recommend to Gaffney City Council how the money should be doled out.

The committee will hear the requests today at a 3 p.m. meeting before making its final recommendations next week.

According to city officials, 11 organizations will seek Atax money. The Cherokee County Historical and Preservation Society (CHAPs) is asking for the highest amount - $25,000. The South Carolina Peach Festival is seeking $20,000, while Kirby Memorial Baptist Church and the local Little League organization each want $15,000. The church is seeking funds for a concert. Little League officials want the money for the Cal Ripken Southeast Regional tournament.

The Uptown Business Association has requested $8,000 in A-Tax money.

The Cherokee County Veterans Day Organization, American Legion Post 201, Uptown Cultural Events, Martin Luther King Day Parade organizers, the Gaffney Little Theater and the Friends of Cowpens also have submitted requests for a portion of the A-Tax money.
