BRIEFS Bryan Colangelo's rebuilding job as president and general manager of the Toronto Raptors got a little easier. Colangelo and the Raptors had their first major breakthrough Tuesday night, winning the NBA lottery and the right to pick first in the June 28 draft in New York. ''There's some jockeying that can be done,'' Colangelo said. ''Maybe we'll trade down and end up with two players out of the draft. We'll see. We've got a lot of options. This is a great day and an exciting day for this organization.'' With the Raptors coming off a 2755 season, it was easy to see how important the lottery was to Colangelo, hired in February after leaving the Phoenix Suns. When the contenders for the top pick were reduced to Toronto, Chicago and Charlotte, Colangelo got fidgety during a commercial break at the NBA Entertainment Studios, taking a drink of water and straightening his tie and jacket several times. Petco Park might eventually drive the San Diego Padres batty. The Padres couldn't win when ace Jake Peavy struck out a team-record 16 batters on Monday night, yet they had just two hits on Tuesday and won for rookie Mike Thompson, who allowed a homer to the opposing pitcher. Josh Barfield's bases-loaded grounder bounced off third baseman Chipper Jones' chest for an error and brought in the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Padres beat the Atlanta Braves 2-1 Tuesdasy night to snap a four-game losing streak. ''To win with two hits, that's not pretty, but you take it,'' said manager Bruce Bochy, whose team won for the second time in eight games. |
